About

About Enoch Cree Nation

Enoch Cree Nation, maskêkosihk, is a Plains Cree Treaty 6 Nation on the western edge of Edmonton, Alberta.

maskêkosihk (ᒪᐢᑫᑯᓯᐦᐠ) (People of the land of the medicine) — Enoch Cree Nation, known in Cree as maskêkosihk (ᒪᐢᑫᑯᓯᐦᐠ), "People of the land of the medicine," is a Plains Cree Nation in Treaty 6 territory. The Nation shares an 8 km border with the west edge of Edmonton and has more than 3,000 registered members. Its lands include two reserves, which together cover about 53 km²:

  • Enoch Cree Nation 135, the main community
  • Enoch Cree Nation 135A

The Nation traces its roots to the Lapotac band, which the Crown recognized in 1842. Enoch Lapotac became chief in 1883 after his brother, Chief Tommy Lapotac, passed away. The reserve originally covered 44.5 square miles. Forced land surrenders in 1902 and 1908 reduced it to the 20.5 square miles it is today.

The Nation works to preserve and promote its culture, language, history and spirituality, including the Plains Cree language. Each year it hosts a competition powwow that can draw up to 1,000 participants. The maskekosihk Recovery Community, an addiction recovery centre, is grounded in nehiyaw pimâtisiwin, a way of life based on balance, connection and wellness.

The River Cree Resort and Casino anchors the Nation's economy and is going through a self-funded expansion. Enoch is a member of the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations. It is also building an elders facility, a cultural centre and a medical centre.
